Sleep apnea can be a serious and sometimes life-threatening condition that can take a toll on your quality of sleep and overall wellbeing. It occurs in about 3% of healthy weight individuals, and over 20% of obese people.
When you think of sleep apnea, you don’t typically think of seeking help from your dentist. But there are ways we can help. Don’t let fatigue from sleep apnea compromise your quality of life.
The most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA occurs when your throat tissue collapses, blocking your airway. If left untreated, OSA can cause severe complications, including high blood pressure as well as increased risk of stroke heart attack, and diabetes.

Over half of OSA patients are overweight. Extra tissue around your throat can cause it to collapse and block your airway during sleep. You may also have OSA if you:
Are 65 or older (one in ten people over 65 have sleep apnea)
Have a family history of sleep apnea
Have high blood pressure
Are male (middle-aged men are twice as likely to have sleep apnea than middle-aged women)
Have been told you snore louder than a freight train? Do you wake up exhausted, despite getting a solid eight hours of sleep every night? If so, you might be experiencing sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea occurs when your breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. This interruption prevents your body from entering the proper sleep cycles, leaving you and anyone who sleeps in the same room as you left feeling exhausted the next morning.
While a diagnosis of sleep apnea can be alarming, it is a treatable condition. There are many steps you can take on your own to help. However, they should not replace medical evaluation and treatment. So, contact a doctor immediately if you spot the warning signs.

Sleep apnea is most commonly treated with a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine. Unfortunately, CPAP machines limit your sleeping positions and can cause dry nose and throat. The good news is that CPAP is not the only effective way to treat OSA.
