Dental phobia is the fear of going to the dentist. If you suffer from this condition, you are not alone. About 5% of adults in the United States have Dental Phobia. We are pleased to offer sedation dentistry at our cosmetic dental practice in Sacramento, CA.
We offer three types of sedation dentistry:
Oral sedatives: We write you a prescription for an anti-anxiety medication that you take an hour or so before your appointment. Oral sedatives require that someone drives you home and stays with you until you are no longer under the influence.
Intravenous sedatives: This is also known as IV Sedation. It puts you into a light sleep, and you will likely not remember anything about the procedure.
If you have or are currently experiencing any of the following conditions, sedation dentistry could be right for you.
- Phobia related to dental procedures.
- Bad experience with dental work in the past
- Particularly sensitive oral nerves.
- Resistance to local anesthetic
- General anxiety disorder
- A smallmouth that gets increasingly sore during dental treatment
If you fear needles or have anxiety about being vulnerable in the dental chair, sedation dentistry is probably a good fit for you. Dental sedation can help you get through root canals, tooth extractions, dental implantation, and more. We typically do not offer sedation dentistry treatment for routine care, but if you suffer from extreme anxiety, you are welcome to request it.
If you’re putting off dental work because you fear the pain or any other part of the treatment, sedation dentistry might offer the best solution. When you ignore issues such as dental caries, loose or broken teeth, and other problems, you put your oral health at risk. Furthermore, the problem might become more complicated as time passes, which could mean that you’ll need more extensive dental work in the future.
