Scaling and root planing treats gum disease and protects your teeth from cavities and decay. It is a non-surgical treatment technique that removes tartar and plaque buildup found in your gums and around the roots of your teeth. Scaling and root canal procedure disinfects your soft tissues and prevents gum disease from progressing.
After the bacteria has been removed, Dr. Monica Crooks will complete the treatment by sealing your gums with a laser to reduce discomfort and sterilize the area.
Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease, and is almost always completely reversible if treated early. Unfortunately, left untreated, it can progress your deep tissues and eventually cause bone and tooth loss. If you experience bleeding or sure gums when brushing or flossing, you probably have gingivitis.
Scaling and root planing treats gingivitis, knocking out gum disease before it progresses into your bones or teeth.
We start with a local anesthetic to numb the treatment area. Then we use an ultrasonic scaler and other hand instruments to remove the plaque and calculus from below your gum line to clean the roots of your teeth and smooth any rough surfaces. This process clears away plaque and tartar so your gum tissues can reattach to your teeth.
For the procedure to be successful, you must maintain an at-home oral health care routine after treatment. Flossing daily to remove food debris and plaque can stop bacteria from causing further destruction in your mouth.
