Doctors and researchers have been investigating the effects of COVID-19 on the human body, and resources are being employed to study the possible impact of the pandemic on teeth, gums, and oral hygiene. Although there isn’t enough research that proves COVID-19 leads to poor oral health, one study conducted in 2021 suggests that poor oral health could potentially lead to contracting the virus.
In this article, we will be looking into the top 5 dental issues people have faced after contracting Covid-19. We will be examining the symptoms, causes, and potential treatments for each dental issue.

1. Gingival Inflammation
People who contracted Covid-19 claimed to have experienced bleeding and inflammation in the gums, resulting from increased inflammation in the body due to the elevated levels of cytokines. Once you contract COVID-19, your immune system can become overwhelmed, repairing the damage caused in your respiratory system, and resulting in your teeth and gums being neglected. Rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution to soothe your gums and floss regularly to treat gingival inflammation.
2. Dry Mouth
COVID-19 and the need to wear a face mask may contribute to dry mouth symptoms caused by a lack of hydration complicated by breathing from your mouth while wearing a face mask. If you are not keeping yourself hydrated, your oral tissues may begin to desiccate. Considering it has been found that the oral cavity is regarded as a potential route for SARS-CoV-2 entry. Therefore, to prevent dry mouth, we should drink enough water and consume hydrating fruits and vegetables throughout the day.

3. Oral Ulcerations
Contracting Covid-19 has been linked to vascularity anomalies caused by the viral damage of the blood vessels. The virus affects the blood vessels and results in oxygen deprivation to parts of the body, leading to oral ulcerations. Such tissue damage can be further aggravated due to inflammation.
4. Cracked Teeth
Medical reports have noted an increase in patients who fractured their teeth during the pandemic caused by excessive teeth grinding and clenching. In addition, the pandemic took a toll on everyone’s mental health and thus triggered symptoms of anxiety such as teeth grinding. Less exposure to sun and mineral deficiency might be another reason for weak and chipped teeth.
5. Loss of Taste and Smell
One of the significant symptoms of contracting Covid-19 is the loss of taste and smell. Although it is not directly linked to oral health, it does cause discomfort and irritation for patients. The loss of taste and smell eventually returns after the patient has recovered from the virus.
